Unseen by all but be alone 2009
Gold thread and fixings
Delicate handmade golden cobwebs are suspended in the nooks and crannies of spaces, almost unseen until a glint of sunlight illuminates them. Originally made for Tattershall Castle, a medieval fortification in Lincolnshire, which was abandoned for 400 years over which time nature took over the building and destroying the lavish interiors. The title is taken from a medieval fairytale that, like many stories of the time, uses spinning as a metaphor for the goodness of a woman. The work inserted a female presence into a space in which the historical narrative presented was overwhelmingly male.
Originally commissioned for ‘House of Bling’ at Tattershall Castle a National Trust property, then subsequently shown at Innsbruck International (Austria), Temple Gallery (USA), Galerie M+R Fricke (Germany) and Workplace Gallery (UK)
